How to Start Writing a Story

Do you wish you could write an engaging  story as well as J.K. Rowling, Charles Dickens or R.L. Stine? To begin, realize the essential outline to become a professional writer is quite simple, but the devil is in the details so to speak. Let’s take it step by step and then you can see how your creativity and persistence will put you on the path to becoming a decent author. We’ll start by writing one book.

The Spark of Your Story

The first step to writing a story is coming up with an idea. It will be an idea that you enjoy and that you would love to relay to others. The concept can be anything, anything  at all! Maybe you want to write about an ancient kingdom, or a drama concerning the stresses and strains of raising children as a single mother, or a story about a rumor concerning a lost treasure, or the adventures of a child prodigy navigating his way through an uncaring society. Take inspiration from your favorite things, experiences or places or people. Once you’ve got an idea, try to summarize it into one or two sentences.

Creating Your Characters and the Settings for Your Story

Who is the primary protagonist? Or are there a few; a team or group of friends or a chance encounter between two people?.Start to refine your characters.Think about their appearance, personality, their likes and dislikes. What could be his or her backstory? How will this person or these people contribute to your story? Next, sketch out the setting, the backdrop for your characters’ adventures. Is it a big bustling city or a rural mountain village? Is it an alternate reality, an incredible future or something in the far distant past? Make your setting come alive with rich, vivid details that will transport your readers into your world.

Outlining the Plot to Propel Your Story

Lastly, let’s talk about the plot. This is what guides the story from one event to the next, bringing your story to life! Typically, the plot begins with some kind of problem or challenge that your character(s) a4e involved in or must face. Then your story unfolds, piece by piece, through the various twists and turns and as the problems get solved, the challenges are overcome and the mysteries are uncovered. Your story can end however you want it to. Let your imagination be your guide.

The secret to writing an engaging story is to have fun with imagination. So go on and start telling your story. We can’t wait to see where your imagination takes you!
